Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — we're a local, family-owned business. Gavyn & Shannon aren’t just the founders but the people you’ll be working with directly.
We’re based in Mount Maunganui, but we create outdoor spaces across the Bay of Plenty and beyond — including Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane, Coromandel, Waikato, Matamata, and Morrinsville. We've even built one in Hawaii (someone flew us halfway around the world for it!).
If you’re further afield, get in touch & let’s see if we can make it happen.
47 Aerodrome Road, Mount Maunganui. Pop in and see us Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.
It depends on the size:
- Under 20sqm: generally exempt from building consent under NZ building code.
- Between 20-30sqm: no consent required *but* a PS1 (Producer Statement) is mandatory. A chartered professional engineer must design and review the structure before its built.
- Over 30sqm: Full building consent required.Check out the relevant building code info here.

A PS1 (Producer Statement – Design) is a formal statement from a Chartered Professional Engineer confirming that a structure meets the New Zealand Building Code. It's issued at design stage, before construction starts.
No PS1 = no compliance = a red flag on your building report when it comes time to sell.
(Or refinance. Or claim insurance)
When you go to sell your home, your lawyer will request the LIM and property file. If there's a structure over 10sqm with no engineering record attached to it, that's flagged — and it becomes the buyer's lawyer's problem to solve… which in practice means it becomes your problem to solve, at the worst possible time to be solving it.
No. A PS1 is a design-stage document — it certifies structure before it's built. Once it's up, you can't retroactively produce one.
In short: the paperwork is far cheaper & easier to complete before the build.
Every Archishade structure over 20sqm is engineered and issued with a PS1. It means your project is on record as compliant from day one. If you ever sell, refinance, or make an insurance claim, there's nothing to worry about. It’s all there waiting for you.
Yes — we love a challenge! Tricky or unusual angles are exactly what custom design solves that off-the-shelf kitsets can't.
Every project is custom, so pricing varies — but as a starting point, Poly-glaze starts from $10k and Archi-glaze from $15k. Most clients land somewhere between $20k–$30k once you factor in wider spans and custom design (a farm-sized project is a different job to a small courtyard). Your final quote depends on size, roofing choice and site conditions, which is why we start with a free consultation.
A couple of reasons. Aluminium is priced by weight, and we use 3mm — most pergolas on the market use 1mm. That means more of an investment, but that’s the point: your outdoor space is an investment. It adds value to your home, so we make sure our pergolas are built to last (complete with 10 year warranty).
Secondly, we’re a team of qualified engineers. Our structures aren't created using off-the-shelf or kitset parts from overseas. Every structure is custom-designed, engineered, manufactured & installed by us, right here in Mount Maunganui.
The wrong pergola costs more than the right one ever will.
Pergolas take around 6 weeks to manufacture and are usually installed in a single day. Blinds take 3–6 weeks and go up in a day, too.
We use only the highest quality, structural-grade 6061 T6 aluminium to ensure durability and longevity.
Our acrylic and polycarbonate roofing sheets offer 99.9% UV resistance, protecting your family from the harsh New Zealand sun and preserving your outdoor furniture and decking. Dulux powder coating on all our framework adds a premium finish that matches your home’s exterior and surroundings.
We prioritise using high-quality, locally sourced materials to ensure durability and compliance with local building standards. Even our inbuilt lights are New Zealand-made.
Yes, all our structures are designed and engineered in-house to ensure precision, quality, and compliance with building codes.
When you visit the showroom, you're standing a few metres from where your pergola will actually be built. We’re the pergola builders you can trust to work closely with architects and chartered engineers to manage any council consent process efficiently.
Absolutely. We often integrate custom lighting to our pergolas to enhance the functionality & aesthetic.
Yes, our roofing materials allow natural light to filter through while providing 99.9% UV protection. How bright your pergola feels will depend on your chosen tint:
- Clear – Lets through all the light and heat.
- Grey – Reduces heat and light while remaining transparent.
- Diffused – Reduces heat, light, and glare (no longer transparent)
No. Our pergolas are chartered-engineer-certified to withstand high wind zones.
Yes — that's the beauty of choosing to build something custom! Choose from 250 Dulux powder-coat colours, and pick your roofing from clear, grey-tint or diffused white glazing (depending how much light and privacy you want).
That's exactly what it's engineered for. Every structure is chromate-treated before powder coating, and Dulux backs the finish with their own warranty for homes up to 1m from the shoreline.
